USAID Provides X-Ray Machines to Support Cambodia’s Fight Against TB

For Immediate Release

Monday, June 27, 2022

Phnom Penh, June 27, 2022. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) donated six state of the art, digital X-ray machines to the National Center for Tuberculosis and Leprosy (CENAT) and provincial health departments in a ceremony held at CENAT offices in Phnom Penh today.

“Controlling tuberculosis is a global priority and USAID is proud to support the Ministry of Health’s commitment to end TB in Cambodia by 2030,” said Ms. Erin Nicholson, USAID/Cambodia Acting Mission Director. “The X-ray machines we hand over today will help find missing TB cases in the community and will improve health for the most vulnerable Cambodians.”

The portable X-ray machines will screen and diagnose people for TB and complement other forms of diagnostic testing in public referral hospitals and at the community level in 10 under-served operational districts.  USAID will support the installation of artificial intelligence software for the X-ray machines, which will enable digital detection of TB, resulting in reduced workloads for X-ray technicians and improvement in the accuracy of diagnosis. In addition, these machines will play an important role in the third national TB prevalence survey taking place later this year.

Cambodia is no longer on the global list of the top 30 high burden TB countries, however there is still an estimated 20,000 missing TB cases in the country. USAID is committed to supporting the National TB Program through this activity and other projects that are improving TB case finding, diagnostics, monitoring, and evaluation of TB.
