Nikita Latypov lives and breathes music. But he must rely solely upon his hearing to compose, play, and experience music. The 18-year-old from Shymkent, a city in southern Kazakhstan, was diagnosed with optic nerve atrophy when he was a child. The disease is incurable and has deprived Nikita of his sight. However, this has not stopped him from pursuing his love of music. Since the age of four, he has been composing his own music pieces and he can play any melody on the piano.
Today, USAID’s Governance Support Program, in partnership with the Blind and Deaf Society of Turkmenistan and with support from the Embassy of Malaysia in Turkmenistan, concluded a month-long educational program, designed to improve the skills of sign language interpreters from across Turkmenistan. The training course, held by national and international experts, will support the government of Turkmenistan’s accessibility and inclusivity goals for those with hearing impairments. The course, which consisted of 271 class hours, trained 12 interpreters.

Zahira Begalieva has long been promoting the rights of people with disabilities in Kazakhstan and helping them secure jobs through her ITeachMe Competence Development Center. Zahira, who herself lives with a serious musculoskeletal disease, knows firsthand how critical accessibility and inclusion can be.

Nazilya Huseynova, a doll maker from Turkmenistan, used to help her grandmother sew clothes as a child. At the age of 10, she sat down at a sewing machine for the first time. Today she thinks fondly of those early days of mastering a new craft – and the doors it has opened for her. At the age of 18, Nazilya became a professional seamstress. Nazilya is an accountant by training, but sewing became her vocation. She has successfully raised two children while working on her own terms as a seamstress, and always made time to study new techniques.

Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), in partnership with the Ashgabat Stock Exchange (ASE), awarded certificates to professionals for successfully completing training courses on brokerage services and securities issuance.
