Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, August 24, 2022 – This week, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is kicking off a series of Syr Darya River Day celebrations in four countries of Central Asia to call attention to the need for improved transboundary cooperation in water management. Under the theme, “Syr Darya – A River of Friendship,” the events will raise awareness about water and climate challenges confronting the region and the importance of joint action to ensure future economic prosperity and water security for Central Asia. 

The Syr Darya river basin (along with its twin river, Amu Darya) supplies 90 percent of the region’s river water, provides home to 80 percent of Central Asia’s population, and covers 37 percent of the land area, including most of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, as well as large parts of Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan.

Today, the United States Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Kazakhstan Rule of Law program, implemented by the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI), and the Committee for Civil Society Affairs under the Ministry of Information and Social Development of the Republic of Kazakhstan, organized a meeting between regional civil society organizations (CSOs) and the government to discuss the current challenges and opportunities for their participation in decision-making processes.

Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), partnered with the Ministry of National Economy of the Republic of Kazakhstan, National Chamber of Entrepreneurs Atameken, the Center for the Development of Women’s Entrepreneurship, and microfinance organization Arnur Credit to host a series of trainings on the “Creation of Women Cooperatives”. Through the creation of cooperatives, more women entrepreneurs can integrate into local supply chains across Central Asia.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is facilitating the expansion of bilateral trade between Pakistan and Kazakhstan and has helped organize the third ‘Made in Pakistan’ trade event at the Atakent Exhibition Center in Almaty, Kazakhstan, on May 19-23. Dr. Sajjad Ahmed Seehar, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to the Republic of Kazakhstan, and Ryder Rogers, Director of USAID Central Asia's Economic Development Office, opened the exhibition on May 19.

USAID, in partnership with the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of Turkmenistan and local experts, concluded a series of four seminars and forums for government representatives, civil society, and entrepreneurs involved in waste management.  The Government of Turkmenistan prioritizes waste management in the nation’s environmental protection and sustainable development strategies.  To support the Government of Turkmenistan’s priorities, USAID has facilitated strategic discussions on new models of cooperation between municipalities, civil society and local entrepreneurs to reduce waste, increase recycling, and improve waste segregation and disposal mechanisms.

USAID Contributes to the Improvement of Investment Legislation in Kazakhstan

Today, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through its Kazakhstan Rule of Law program organized an investment roundtable to discuss proposals for amendments and improvements to Kazakhstan’s investment legislation.  The program is implemented by the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI), in cooperation with both the Supreme Court of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the National Company "KAZAKH INVEST" under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

On April 18-19, The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) hosted a two-day meeting with Deputy Ministers of Energy from around Central Asia to enhance regional cooperation and strategize on the implementation of a fully functional and sustainable Central Asia regional electricity market (CAREM).
