Almaty, Kazakhstan, September 22, 2022 – Today, the Republic of Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Health and National Scientific Center of Phthisiopulmonology, with support from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria (GFATM), kicked off the sixth international conference “Eliminating Tuberculosis in Central Asia: Best practices, challenges, and perspectives.” Dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the National Scientific Center of Phthisiopulmonology, the two-day event focuses on reducing drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB) in Central Asia and brings together more than 350 government officials, including the Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan, directors of Central Asia TB Programs, representatives from Ministries of Health from Central Asian countries, key stakeholders, and international partners including the World Health Organization (WHO), GFATM, and Stop TB Partnership.

In honor of World Tuberculosis (TB) Day, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) today held an awards ceremony to recognize journalists and bloggers for their coverage of TB. The ceremony represents the culmination of a contest to foster media coverage of TB and, in turn, bring important TB information to the public. Since January 2022, 10 items have been published and submitted for the contest.

USAID Opens Way for Turkment Crafts to be Sold Globally

Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), in partnership with the local company “Orlan”, held the final event of the “Handmade Exports 2021” (HME) startup incubator program.  The event featured a crafts exhibition of Turkmenistan’s finest artisans and a competition of ten program finalists, presenting their new businesses, products and progress achieved throughout the HME program to a panel of judges.

With support from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID),  Uzbekistani companies enter into negotiations with U.S. importers.

With funding from USAID, three large Uzbekistani horticulture exporters and the Export Promotion Agency of Uzbekistan attended the annual World Ag Expo in Tulare, California from February 8-10, 2022.  This was the first time any Uzbekistani fruit exporter had attended the event.

This week, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded Governance Support Program, in partnership with the Hydrometeorology Service of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan and international experts, organized the second seminar on advanced automated meteorological measuring and information systems for weather forecasters in Ashgabat and Lebap.  The Government of Turkmenistan is prioritizing the mitigation of climate change risks and the development of climate resilience strategies.  USAID is proud to support the implementation of the country’s National Strategy on Climate Change by facilitating science and technology-based solutions and increasing the capacity of the government as well as citizens to adopt climate-friendly practices.  In addition, this event is part of a series of USAID-supported interventions aimed at strengthening climate resilience in Turkmenistan.

On February 8-12, 2022, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded Central Asia Media Program is hosting its third annual innovative seminar on media and digital literacy, MediaCAMP Eduthon 2022. The online event is gathering university professors, schoolteachers, media trainers, and experts in the field of media and digital literacy from Central Asia and beyond to promote media literacy in the region. Over the course of five days, 30 participants from Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan will gain new skills and be mentored as they develop projects promoting media literacy.

USAID Celebrates Accomplishments in Regional Trade and Employment

Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) marked the successful completion of its five-year, regional Competitiveness, Trade, and Jobs activity. The activity facilitated Central Asian exports and increased employment in horticulture, transport and logistics services, and tourism industries. The activity successfully increased competitiveness and expanded trade in these sectors within the region and beyond.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded Safe Migration in Central Asia activity, implemented by Winrock International, partnered with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Central Asia to hold a four-day online campaign dedicated to International Migrants Day, marked annually on December 18. The campaign shared stories of migrants to raise awareness on migrants’ rights. More than a dozen NGOs from Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan joined the online campaign to tell stories of migrants who improved their lives after returning home and receiving support from the USAID-funded Safe Migration in Central Asia activity.

Friday, December 10, 2021 (All day)

Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded Kazakhstan Rule of Law Program, implemented by American Bar Association/Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI), in cooperation with the Committee for Civil Society Affairs under the Ministry of Information and Social Development of the Republic of Kazakhstan (MISD), organized a meeting focused on Kazakhstan’s potential application to join the Open Government Partnership (OGP). The OGP is an international platform that includes 78 governments and thousands of civil society organizations (CSOs) that are committed to making their governments more open, accountable and responsive to citizens. The event provided local CSOs, government officials, and international experts a platform to discuss the value and benefits of joining the OGP, and the challenges and opportunities of Kazakhstan’s potential membership.
