Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, August 24, 2022 – This week, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is kicking off a series of Syr Darya River Day celebrations in four countries of Central Asia to call attention to the need for improved transboundary cooperation in water management. Under the theme, “Syr Darya – A River of Friendship,” the events will raise awareness about water and climate challenges confronting the region and the importance of joint action to ensure future economic prosperity and water security for Central Asia. 

The Syr Darya river basin (along with its twin river, Amu Darya) supplies 90 percent of the region’s river water, provides home to 80 percent of Central Asia’s population, and covers 37 percent of the land area, including most of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, as well as large parts of Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan.

Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Safe Migration in Central Asia, and Future Growth Initiative programs, in partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan conducted a webinar on increasing the export potential of Turkmen enterprises and the role of corporate social responsibility and labor rights in attracting international partners. The webinar was for representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, the Office of the Ombudsman of Turkmenistan, other government agencies, and private sector companies interested in strengthening the country’s capacity to meet international labor standards.

USAID Promotes the Development of E-commerce in Tajikistan

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Chamber of Commerce and Industries of the Republic of Tajikistan jointly hosted the first meeting of the newly-established E-commerce Development Council, designed to promote the development of e-commerce in Tajikistan.  There were than 50 participants, including representatives from the President’s office and other government agencies, the National Bank, donor organizations, financial institutions, and private sector associations. They discussed the Council’s objectives and the future of e-commerce in Tajikistan, including new e-commerce legislation.

Today, the United States Government through its Agency for International Development (USAID), in partnership with the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan, launched a new five-year, $39 million regional energy program “USAID Power Central Asia”. The program will assist the five Central Asian countries—Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan—to meet their national energy priorities, reap economic benefits from cross-border energy trading, and improve energy security through greater regional connectivity.

USAID provides medical equipment

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) handed over medical equipment to 12 healthcare facilities in the Syrdarya, to assist the region in its fight against tuberculosis (TB).  Representatives of the USAID Mission to Uzbekistan, National Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases Center, and the Syrdarya Regional Health Administration participated in the ceremony.  The equipment, including electronic thermometers, stethoscopes, tonometers, and otoscopes, will help healthcare providers in the region deliver efficient and timely care, provide rapid diagnosis, and treat patients with chronic illnesses.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded Partnership for Innovation Program teamed up with PartnersGlobal to facilitate a week-long virtual exchange on ‘Good Governance and Civic Engagement’ that began today. Participants include members of Public Councils, State Administration, Parliament, and civil society organizations from Uzbekistan and the United States.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) funded Central Asia Media Program kicked off the second annual MediaCAMP Eduthon 2021, an innovative seminar on media and digital literacy. The virtual event gathers university professors, schoolteachers, media trainers, and experts in the field of media and digital literacy from Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Over the course of five days, with mentorship from international and local media and digital experts, participants will team up and develop projects on interactive teaching of media and digital literacy to various populations using digital tools.
