Statement by Administrator Samantha Power

Russia’s comments about suspending its participation in the Black Sea Grain Initiative are regrettable. This life-saving agreement between Russia, Ukraine, and Turkey, brokered in July by the United Nations, has allowed the export of more than nine million metric tons of grain and other food products to populations around the world in the midst of a devastating global food crisis.

Statement by Administrator Samantha Power

In 1981, the United Nations established freedom of religion and belief as a fundamental right worldwide, though individual countries had established it long before that. But it wasn’t until 1998 that the International Religious Freedom Act was signed into law, with bipartisan support, and the protection and promotion of religious freedom was elevated as a key priority in U.S. foreign policy. The International Religious Freedom Act mandates the U.S. government, and by extension USAID, to support other governments in safeguarding religious freedom, while leading the global community in condemning religious freedom violations.

This new funding brings the United States’ total assistance to Pakistan for flood response, food security, and disaster preparedness and capacity building efforts to $97 million this year. Ambassador Donald Blome made the announcement today during a visit to affected communities and USAID partner ACTED in Sindh, where approximately 120 families received shelter and hygiene kits.

Statement by Administrator Samantha Power

Last month, I traveled to Pakistan where melted glaciers and unprecedented monsoon rains flooded one third of the country. To fly over the devastation was to witness a sunken world. Three hundred kilometers from the nearest ocean, we saw mainly water, punctuated intermittently by the tops of the tallest trees. Approximately 1,730 people lost their lives in the immediate flooding, while nearly another 12,900 were injured.

Interview

Joining me tonight is Samantha Power, the Administrator for U.S. Agency for International Development. Administrator Power, I appreciate you being with us. I want to start with the images of a little boy from the story that Clarissa Ward filed this week in Mykolaiv. It's one of probably hundreds of scenes like this playing out across Ukraine right now – a little boy helping move some wreckage from a missile strike in that city. It’s likely to get worse, obviously, with winter coming. When you look at these images, what is the U.S. at this point doing about it?

One year ago, Sudan’s military seized power from a transitional civilian government that was working to end three decades of oppression and authoritarian rule. The ousted civilian-led government had been established as a direct result of sustained, unwavering protests by Sudanese citizens – many of them women and youth – demanding a government that would respect their dignity and respond to the needs of the Sudanese people. Over the past 12 months, the military regime has stood in the way of these aspirations, and brutally attempted to stymie the resolve of those seeking civilian rule.

I am deeply alarmed by the reports that dozens of demonstrators have been killed in Chad after the ruling Transitional Military Council extended their original 18-month transition period. The United States condemns this violence, and urges authorities and law enforcement to respect the right of Chadians to assemble peacefully and pursue their aspirations for a transition to a peaceful, inclusive, civilian-led government. We join with our partners in the international community in appealing for calm, and call for the members of the Transitional Military Council to commit themselves to the peaceful and democratic resolution of Chad’s long-running governance crisis, including by honoring the directive of the African Union Peace and Security Council and their own public declarations not to stand in the upcoming elections.
