Though an agricultural engineer by trade, Abdulqader, 35, spent the four years following Mosul’s liberation from ISIS working to remove waste and rubble from the destroyed areas of the city. Abdulqader was concerned by the toxic smoke created by burning the organic waste and building remains together and was determined to find a safer solution.

Milkia warmly welcomes us into her home. We offer to speak outside, but she ushers us into her living room, where we sit down on the matted floor, keeping our distance with our masks. She has three rooms, including a small kitchen with a window. Milkia likes to cooke there and looks at life outside in the refugee camp. There are many passers-by, including a few little shops.

If you asked Marwan, 27, what he imagined for his future before ISIS occupied Sinjar in 2014, he would have said that he wanted to finish his degree, find a job, and start a family in his hometown of Til-Qasab Village.
